Just as some books require that players keep track of a character's inventory, others also require the selection of less tangible characteristics like magic spells known or proficiencies in certain useful activities. Most books that feature skills require the reader to pick a limited number of abilities from a list before beginning the game; some also allow more skills to be learned during play or as the result of successfully completing an adventure. Sometimes certain skills are required in order to make certain choices, and other times skills allow other rules to be bent in some manner.
