This role-playing game was Penguin's replacement for the earlier Fighting Fantasy: The Introductory Role-Playing Game. Around the time of its release, some of the supplements for that previous game were reprinted in a slightly different format.

A second edition of the game was released in 2011 by Arion Games/Cubicle7, prompting more reissues (and some revisions) of earlier supplements (as well as some new products). These editions are available in hardback and soft-cover editions. Some are also available in pdf format.

A Limited Edition hardback single volume numbered and signed edition containing the 2nd edition core AFF Rulebook, Out Of The Pit, and Titan: The Fighting Fantasy World was also printed in December 2016.

As of 2017, Arion Games also started to produce full-colour sets of gaming miniatures (numbered AFMxxx) designed for use with the series. These were supplied as either .pdf or .ppt files for the purchaser to print his- or herself.

In 2017, a sci-fi version of the rules was also produced entitled Stellar Adventures. Several modules and reference aids have been subsequently released to accompany the sci-fi game.
