These books, set in the world of Orb first introduced in the Fighting Fantasy series, cast the reader as a Ninja warrior. During the course of the series, this character grows in strength and power while battling numerous foes. Players have several Ninja skills to choose from and must keep track of combat ability in a variety of specializations. Combat is more strategic than usual, with the reader actually having to make choices about which attacks to make rather than simply rolling dice endlessly. As usual for this sort of gamebook, there are inventory items to collect, and these, along with the various character stats, are carried from book to book. All six volumes were first released in England and then reprinted in the United States; in keeping with the general trend, the American editions are inferior to the British ones, omitting the color maps found in the originals and generally using cheaper materials.

All six of the original books were re-released through Amazon CreateSpace in the 2010s, along with a completely new prequel (Book 0) and final part of the cycle (Book 7). All eight books were then further re-issued in deluxe hardcover editions by Megara Entertainment with full-colour artwork.

The Way of the Tiger series is in story, expanded from the Fighting Fantasy title Talisman of Death. The series is set on the richly detailed world of Orb, and you play a young ninja warrior named Avenger, who is well versed in unarmed combat and the deadly arts.

This series features some very fanciful fighting styles and techniques [especially martial arts], both from you and your many opponents. With this particular style of writing, it makes the adventure seem much like a classic kung fu movie of vengeance and reclaiming honour.

What a wonderful series! I first encountered it in the late 80's, and while not a fan of martial arts or even ninjas, I liked the dark atmosphere and the great artwork. It was tough as nails though, from what I remember. The ending was disappointing, but years later when I found out about the reissue and two new volumes, I just HAD to get all of them! I miss the original illustrations, though. Recommended!
