These thick gamebooks are set in the world of the authors' Dragon Warriors role-playing game, which was published in a gamebook-like paperback format by Corgi, though they do not require knowledge of that game for play. The series distinguishes itself from the masses in a couple of notable ways. First of all, it supports up to four players; a single person may play with a powerful character, or a team of four people may play with a diversified group of less powerful characters (a Warrior, an Enchanter, a Sage and a Trickster). When multiple players participate, a single person is designated as the reader, and he or she must read the book aloud to the group; however, at certain points, different characters have to read sections to themselves privately, giving different knowledge to different people. Another innovation is the inclusion of a particularly tactical combat system. Whenever there is a fight, a map is provided showing where the players and their foes are located, and players must resolve the fight using counters or miniatures.

On 20 August 2014, the first four books were re-issued by Fabled Lands Publishing with different updated cover art through Amazon's print-on-demand service. The fifth book was finally published on 10 June 2019 after a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Book 1 was also further re-issued in a deluxe hardcover edition by Megara Entertainment with new colour artwork alongside the original black-and-white illustrations.

Blood Sword is one of the finest gamebook series ever created. The adventures, taking place in the world of Legend [the same as in Dragon Warriors], involve you accidentally taking up the quest to find 3 pieces of the legendary Blood Sword. This sword is the only thing that has the power to stop the True Magi, 5 wizards of unimaginable power, who seek to return to the world.

Unlike most gamebooks, it supports up to 4 players in a team. In fact this is far more fun than playing through it alone. There's a huge element of teamwork required in order to succeed. The books are also very descriptive, with many paths open to reach the end goal.
