Each title in this two-player series is actually a set of two books, one containing even-numbered sections, the other containing odd-numbered ones. The first and last sets don't have distinguishing titles to tell the two volumes apart, while the middle two sets do. The sets cover a wide variety of scenarios, from gladiatorial combat to international relations, and some books are playable solitaire while others really are not. Because of the diversity of topics, the rules vary from book to book. They are adaptable to various levels of complexity, and they make use of dice-rolling for randomization and codewords for tracking certain conditions. Coordination between the two players is achieved by use of "WAIT" instructions. When a player encounters a "WAIT" instruction, he or she must wait for the other player to also receive a "WAIT" instruction before they can both begin reading again – this keeps both players' experiences more or less synchronized.
