Fireguard's Thoughts: |
This book avoids the randomness I felt hindered The Planet of Terror, and manages to feel like many of the evil wizards' castles I've explored in my time. However, it maintains the trial-and-error approach prevalent to this series, where repeated explorations of different options are the only means of finding one's way to victory. |
Guillermo's Thoughts: |
(Review based on the Spanish translation). The Castle of Fear is a fun fantasy adventure filled with interesting traps and creatures. I have a soft nostalgic spot for it even if most of the visual puzzles are laughably easy. The full-colour artwork by Alastair Graham is superb, making the book (and the rest of the series) feel like a computer graphic adventure game. All in all, my love for interactive fiction owes as much to this little adventure as it does to The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. |
