These fantasy gamebooks feature a fairly typical game system. Players have fifty points to distribute among five attributes (Strength, Agility, Luck, Magic and Swordsmanship), with certain characters being more inclined to use certain attributes than others. Players also keep track of inventory items and select spells to cast. Casting spells costs Strength points, which are a measure of health. Combat can also reduce Strength; it is resolved by rolling two dice and comparing them to a character's Swordsmanship attribute; whenever a roll is less than or equal to a character’s Swordsmanship, Strength damage is dealt to his or her opponent; this proceeds until one combatant is killed. The feature which makes the books unusual is that, although they can be played alone in the usual fashion, they can also be played with a friend. When two players participate, at the end of each paragraph, players call out the section numbers they intend to turn to. In some cases, cross-reference tables are provided which allow one player's actions to affect the other player's position in the book. Although the multiplayer game is largely cooperative in nature, there are opportunities for players to betray one another.
