Scrumptious's Thoughts: |
This title masquerades as a gamebook, having the trappings but not the substance. Sure, your protagonist has stats and there's a combat system. But other than dying in combat, very little that you do will affect the story. Fail a skill roll? You may be denied some minor insight, but the plot will continue regardless. Make a choice that could derail the story? Circumstances will force you to change your mind. For example, after you have completed the quest, you have one final choice to make. Will the hero stay and marry the heroine, or will he return to earth? Choose the latter and he will come to regret the decision, but it doesn't matter. A few months later, his former companions invite him back and he happily accepts. In other words, none of the choices have any significance. This book should have been a standard novel, not an interactive one. The gamebook aspect is dishonest, dissatisfying, and superfluous. |
