Demian's Thoughts: |
I entered Ellen Kushner's final entry in the series with fairly high expectations, considering how much I enjoyed Mystery of the Secret Room. Unfortunately, by comparison, this is a disappointment. It's fast-paced and features a lot of choices, and there are occasional hints of humor, but it doesn't have as much energy and creativity as the author's previous adventure. The King Arthur legend has been thoroughly milked for content in the gamebook realm, and this book doesn't really go anywhere new. In fact, thanks to a large number of abrupt, unsatisfying endings, it frequently goes nowhere at all. You could certainly do worse, but don't go out of your way to track this one down. |
Jordashebasics's Thoughts: |
This book has some of the whimsy that Ellen Kushner likes to incorporate - magic, legends, a bit of time travel. As far as her efforts go, it's not quite at the top, but it's not too bad. There's a bit of fun to be had, and most of the book doesn't take itself too seriously. There aren't many downer endings, so it rarely feels like you've been cheated by random events. I was pleased with how the green giant storyline plays out - there are three primary endings, and they split nicely between good, bad, and middling, and they are directly tied to your decisions. |
Waluigi Freak 99's Thoughts: |
This book is a good one. It had plenty of good adventures and enough originality to keep me interested. The plot about the giant and his game stands out as most notable, although the other storylines were almost as good. |
