If you've ever enjoyed a Fighting Fantasy gamebook, then The Demon Sorcerer should really be a must-buy. A thoroughly enjoyable romp through a fantasy world with some enjoyable characters and multiple paths. Mr Lewis' writing style lends itself well to some very tense encounters, especially when being stalked by beastly creatures in the night! Of course, if you've never read a gamebook in your life, then this would also be a great starting point. It's well-written but still easy to read, and your decisions throughout the book do feel like they mean something. Mr Lewis is also a very good artist, and his art is featured throughout. Check it out! |

Let’s take a peek at The Demon Sorcerer. Favorite feature: The game has a really good sense of atmosphere all throughout. Other strengths: The book marries a strongly Tolkienesque plot to a Diablo aesthetic and undertone that works. The artwork is dark, but also soft. Place descriptions are good, writing is solid. Combat is basically Fighting Fantasy, but swingier and a bit more interesting. Enemies can do different attacks, even though it’s usually just minor variations in damage dealt. Drawbacks: The story and gameplay are boiler plate fantasy, but I happen to like the boiler plate! YMMV. I think it would be make a great first gamebook to give as a gift. Dungeon synth artist pairing: Old Sorcery Story: 4 Highly Recommended |
