These fantasy gamebooks follow the component-heavy format initiated by the Enid Blyton's Famous 5 Adventure Games. Each book comes with a variety of components used during play. These collections are fairly similar between the two volumes, with both including a pair of special dice used for combat, a treasure counter wheel, a strength rating counter wheel and a trance spell overlay used to reveal text in special parts of the book. The first book also includes an infra-red power overlay, a "book of wisdom" card containing hints, and a scroll card containing passwords; the second book instead provides a foresight power overlay, a "book of ciphers" card and a scroll card decrypting various codes. Players start the game with a strength of six and without any treasure or equipment; the various special items are brought into play as the story unfolds.

The Compact Adventure Gamebook Shadows of Doom was published a year after these books, and is effectively a continuation of this series, with the same format (choosing which monster to fight and winning a treasure if successful), and even the same illustrator (Terry Oakes, who didn't illustrate any other Stephen Thraves books apart from these three).
