The main selling point of these books is the puzzles, not the combat or the other rules. The combat is different than other gamebooks, but it's still just roll numbers to decide how much damage each combatant does until someone wins.

No, the puzzles make this series different. I found my first gamebook of this series in a library. I solved some puzzles early within the borrowing period, but not all. One puzzle in The Goblin's Revenge (I'll write a detailed review for that book separately) was so tough that it took me several days to work out, only while I was outdoors sitting on a bench while waiting to meet someone.

One problem I have is that many puzzles are on a double-page. If you own the book, that's not a problem, just flatten the book. If you've borrowed the book, I wouldn't dare flatten it, so you have to very carefully go through the maze or have a painful time counting the items.

Another point is that the puzzles make it difficult to cheat. In almost any other gamebook series, you can find ways to get around the rules, getting further than you should. The puzzles are very hard to get around, so you have to play fairly. It's up to you whether the books being cheat-proof is good or bad.
