Demian's Thoughts: |
This book takes place about three years after the preceding one, though there's no real connection between the two books (which isn't surprising since they were most likely written simultaneously). This book is mainly just a collection of random encounters; it doesn't have much in the way of a plot. Still, it manages to be fun and offers a variety of different adventures. It also has a rather Lovecraftian creature on the cover for those who like such things.... |
Kveto's Thoughts: |
This is the second Conan book of the series. It is an interesting angle to feature a licensed character in the series, but it is not entirely successful. The REH world of Conan and the D&D universe, while they have things in common, are not the same. In the Conan universe, magic is much rarer, causing more fear amongst those unfamiliar with it. And monsters tend to be more nature-based and less plentiful, often saved for the climax of the adventure. I also wondered how these kids' books would handle the up-front sex in the Conan books. They do so by ignoring this aspect entirely. In this book, you are Conan, accompanied by a sidekick from Zembabwei whose name I forget, as he serves the role of any sidekick in a Conan tale. The adventure is basically a city crawl with a number of random stories you can get involved with, as Demian mentions. The most interesting is a conflict with a cult of serpent men which feels very Conanesque (or Kullesque). A decent book which would fit well into the Conan comics, but feels awkward as an Endless Quest. |
