This is the second book written by Edward Packard's daughter (after The Evil Wizard in the Choose Your Own Adventure for Younger Readers series), and it's a decent adventure story featuring all of the staples of the series: ancient mysteries, an adventurous relative, evil smugglers, etc., etc. There's really nothing here that hasn't been done before, but the tale is told pretty well despite its familiarity, with simple but engaging writing and a number of meaningful and interesting choices to make. It's not innovative enough to earn classic status for itself, but it successfully evokes the flavor of earlier books in the series well enough to please fans of those works. |
