Guillermo's Thoughts: |
I enjoyed this book much more than Big Trouble. Whereas that entry had a vibe of inevitable tragedy permeating it, this falls more into the good old dungeon-crawling type, and works much more effectively as a gamebook. The author managed to capture quite well the grittiness of the Underdark complex, as well as the flavour of the Forgotten Realms setting (with many of the familiar creatures and places making their appearance). Despite what the cover might suggest, the player character does not engage in much actual fighting (as is the case in the classic Dungeon of Dread, for example). This is an adventure where decision-making and wits count far more for success. There is more than one way to achieve victory, and in some cases survival will depend on making some choices which might appear crazy at first. As I understand it, Endless Quest books are meant as introductory material for people new to D&D or role-playing in general. However, this book fails to give detailed descriptions of several of the creatures the reader encounters. Dedicating a little more space to descriptions would not have broken the rhythm of narration, and would have been easier on novice gamers. If you can look past this flaw, you'll have a very good time reading this book. |
