Dtar's Thoughts:

This story did a good job of exploring some of the less well understood motivations for spying during the U. S. Civil War. In particular, I think a good job was done of explaining that the woman who had been born in Virginia felt more loyalty to her state than either the Union or Confederacy, and chose to aid the Confederacy because that was the side that her state had joined. Other issues touched on are the facts that several states that stayed in the Union actually had slavery also, so the more or less middle ground of states like Maryland and Delaware and places like Washington D. C. had people who were biased toward the Confederacy and its desire to keep the institution of slavery. The nuances involved in this history are important, because a lot of us think of these things in simple terms of this side or that side of the conflict.
