These adventures, each based on a popular series of fantasy novels, use a game system (designed by SwordQuest author Bill Fawcett) that appears to be inspired by Dungeons & Dragons based on the six attributes it uses: Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Constitution, Dexterity and Charisma. Players also keep track of Hit Points and manage their inventory of collected items. A simple combat system is included which consists simply of rolling three dice and comparing them to a "to-hit" value. Compared to the average gamebook of this complexity level, the books have a smaller number of longer sections.
