This series seems like an effective learning tool to help the young reader understand a specific time and place by allowing them to make choices as someone there. The range of possibilities seems realistically limited to what history tells us. First impressions of this series are very good, based on my reading of Ancient Greece, but this series is priced for education, at almost 30USD each.

The hardback editions of these books are produced for the school and library markets, and are therefore quite expensive. However, paperback and ebook versions can be easily found in places like Amazon at much lower prices.

This series is clearly intended for educational purposes. It places the reader in three (or two) distinct roles at a point in history. It tries to give authentic factual information and is an interesting approach to teaching history. The artwork tends to use authentic photos or artwork from the time period.

There is a heavy slant towards US history, with for instance at least 5 books on the American immigration experience (German immigrants, Irish immigrants, Mexican immigrants, Chinese immigrants and Ellis Island) and, in comparison, one book to cover the thousand year history of Ancient Rome.

The books vary in interest in terms of topic, some are generally interesting such as Life as a Samurai or Life as a Viking, with the brutal reality of those lives. While others feel much more like something a teacher would assign. I don't imagine a lot of kids would get excited about The Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Or maybe I was a weird kid.
