Through an interesting collaboration with Steve Jackson Games, these books are based on the popular Car Wars board game, with at least one (the fifth book) being an expansion of a previously-released adventure from Autoduel Quarterly magazine. The books, like the game, are set in a grim, violent future in which "autoduelling" in modified, heavily-armed vehicles is as good a way as any to make a living. Although the books are fairly similar to the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Gamebooks in format since they feature point-based character creation, action resolution with six-sided dice and character sheet bookmarks, they are actually among TSR’s most complex gamebook releases due to a detailed vehicular combat system which features multiple damage locations, critical hits and the need to track ammunition.
