Demian's Thoughts: |
There's really not much to this book: you wander through a bunch of mostly-empty rooms, and eventually you inevitably find the treasure. Clearly the emphasis here is on the page-turning mechanism (which uses notches in the pages to direct the reader to the next location) rather than on the story, and it's easy to see how small children might find this entertaining for at least a little while based just on the navigation. However, the book would need a bit more liveliness to make a lasting impression -- it feels rather sterile as it is with its simple, computer-drawn illustrations and its lack of other characters (apart from a parrot). It seems the author may agree: the next book in the series appears to be a rehash of this adventure, but with more elaborate artwork, more pages, and greater variety of settings and characters. |
