Item-Level Details

Adapted Into: Kelek's Crystal (Interactive Video)
User Summary: The evil sorcerer Kelek has stolen a magical power that keeps the world of Dungeons and Dragons separate from the real world. Evil creatures from the D & D world will invade and destroy the real world, unless you can find three pieces of a magical crystal. Along the way you will have to face the evil wizard Venger and the mighty dragon Tiamat, as well as other minions.
Guillermo's Thoughts:

This is a simple pick-a-path book with no rules except for some inventory management. In this book you play Eric the Cavalier from the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon show. This is somewhat of a nice touch since none of the Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon Show Books allowed you to play Eric. The author also manages to somehow portray him as less annoying than he was in the TV show. There is nothing else to say that is positive about the book.

I am a big fan of Allen Sharp's work on the Storytrails series, but while his writing for that series is excellent, in this book it comes off amateurish and bland. Gameplay is also weak, with all choices either being entirely random in their consequences or being extremely obvious when some strategy is needed. I did not especially care about reading the book several times, since variation between the different story paths is minimal: events pretty much turn out the same way no matter what you do. The quest is short to the point of being insubstantial.

All in all, the book is nothing but a waste of time, and definitely not worth the extremely high price it commands on sites like eBay.

Kveto's Thoughts:

This is a short pick a path style adventure to accompany the reusable sticker album featuring the cartoon characters from the D&D saturday morning cartoon. Interestingly, it is written in 3rd person, as you make choices for the whole group, rather than playing an individual character.

It is very short and simple, under 30 pages, to be expected for fans of the TV show. I guess it represents the characters accurately, but to be honest, on the show the characters had little personality to distinguish them from each other.

It features a few of the AD&D action figure characters such as Zarak the half-orc and Kelek the evil wizard and a few of the toy monsters like a Dragonne and Hook Horror.
