Demian's Thoughts: |
I didn't know what to expect from this book. The author is best-known in Whovian circles for having portrayed the Cyberleader in the classic series. Because of his fascination with the role, he wrote a fairly well-researched nonfiction book attempting to untangle the muddled continuity of the cybernetic creatures across all of their appearances in the show. As it happens, he's also fully capable of tackling fiction, producing a surprisingly mature novel with developed characters, interesting situations, and some new revelations compatible with his theory of Cyberhistory. Of course, it's not perfect -- some twists could be described as cheesy and some elements (like the recurring Wizard of Oz theme) are somewhat inexplicable. Still, it's one of the highlights of the series so far, and a remarkable accomplishment given that it all began with a role that consisted mainly of standing around and saying "Excellent" in a deep voice. |
