barryattles's Thoughts:

Ratings: 0.5

This is the stereotypical Edward Packard sports book. School bullies (Sean), Maths teachers, amusement parks, freak accidents mixed into one; then once a full moon, you finally get to kickoff a soccer match in which all gameplay decisions do not make a difference.

Fireguard's Thoughts:

Perhaps it's just because I was on my own school's soccer team when this book came out, but I thought this was an above average sports book for the CYOA series. I also liked how they worked in a visit to Daredevil Park (from book #114). I thought Soccer Star was brought down a little bit by a ham-fisted attempt to encourage the reader to take a deeper interest in their education. There's nothing wrong with that, but I don't think I'm too far off the mark by saying most people read books like this to take a break from reality.

Stockton's Thoughts:

This is a quintessential CYOA book, written by the quintessential CYOA author. Overall, it is slightly below average due to its breadth of subject. Apart from this, there is little to differentiate Soccer Star from its breathren in the series.

True to form, there is a lot in here that has nothing to do with soccer. Daredevil Park, school bullies, Malcolm X, Madonna, and Hillary Clinton (mentioned in passing as part of the 'ham-fisted' attempt to be educational), and flash floods all share the pages with the main soccer theme. In truth, this isn't really a 'sports' book so much as it is a 'school' book. Fewer distractions could have pushed this entry above so-so status.
