This series of interactive horror stories anticipated the mid-nineties horror boom by over a decade. It follows the same basic format as the other Plot-Your-Own / Plot-It-Yourself series by Wanderer: slightly oversized paperbacks containing straightforward branching-plot stories complete with backwards references at the top of each entry leading back to all of the pages that could have led there. Probably the most unusual feature of the series is that quite a few choices determine not what the reader's character does, but rather what will happen next; for example, rather than asking whether or not to open a door, a choice may ask what will be behind it! Obviously, this doesn’t make for a great deal of plot consistency.
Starting with book five of the American release published by Wanderer, the series changed its name from Plot-Your-Own Horror Stories to Plot-It-Yourself Horror Stories. However, when six titles (all but books six and eight) were reprinted in the United Kingdom by Magnet, they kept the Plot-Your-Own Horror Stories label even though half of them had their main titles altered for some reason. Collectors will also be interested to know that Julian Messner library editions of several titles were issued.
