This pair of mystery novels follows a fairly unique format: each starts with an introduction discussing a crime, and this is followed by a telephone directory. The phone numbers in the directory are actually page numbers, and the reader must make calls in order to deduce the solution to the mystery. The answers are explained at the ends of the books, and the fewer moves the reader uses to solve each mystery, the better.
