These books simulate aerial combat by using a cross-reference system; each player has a book full of illustrations, and by calling out numbers to one another and turning the pages, the participants are able to battle in the skies. The first four titles are set during World War I, the fifth during World War II and the sixth in the present. Rules vary from book to book, with the newer titles generally being more complex than the older ones. The series was first published by Gameshop, Inc., a company which quickly changed its name to Nova Game Designs. Over the years, most of the entries in the series have been published in a variety of different editions, some replacing illustrations with photographs and others adding additional rules or aircraft to the mix. Only the first set was reprinted in the United Kingdom.
