This series is very consistent. In each book, you are chosen to participate in an expedition with a team usually consisting of both adults and kids. You'll be placed in dangerous situations and have to choose the right course of action to avoid disaster. Team dynamics is also explored as you'll be expected to do your part and stay out of trouble. Often there's a team member who is careless or unreliable and who will try to convince you to do stupid things. If you do too many stupid things, you may become the unreliable team member (or be sent home or just die).

The stories are well-written, and the use of technical consultants leads to realistic descriptions and scenarios. The comic book style drawings are excellent. But the problem is that playing it safe always lead to the best outcome while deviating will cause problems. As there is only one path to ultimate success, any significant error will either cause an unfavorable ending or put you on a side path in which your best hope is to simply stay alive. Each book contains a survival guide in which you will find the correct response to all of the dangers you may face. The guide provides an easy way to get through the book, but it's more fun to play a few times before looking up the right answers.
