Rose Estes wrote several fairly intriguing interactive works in the Endless Quest series (and should be credited as the creative mind behind the success of those books), and many of the tonal and atmospheric hallmarks turn up in her more linear tales. That being said, her The Hunter trilogy during the 1990s doesn't quite reach the standards of her earlier output, and the children's epic fantasy standalone novella "Children of the Dragon" is, in no uncertain terms, unfinished and incomplete. That being said, the artistic aspirations and ease of readability make her an inconsistent anomaly in the history of gamebooks; Estes was something of a literary trailblazer and something of a trapped-in-the-scheme-of-things writer with a sincere amount of potential. Ever though I must confess that I consider her work to be largely hit-and-miss, I won't deny for a second that I greatly appreciate and admire what she has done both in and out of the world of interactive fiction. Whether or not she ever reached her fullest potential is to be debated, however. (Many of her works show signs of inconclusive editing, unarranged endings and unfinished lines of thought.) Regardless, she's certainly always been one to watch, and is without a doubt one of the more creative gamebook writers that come to mind when recalling the genre's big innovators.
