c_wickham's Thoughts: |
I enjoyed this gamebook very much. There's a genuine sense of atmosphere to the writing, there's some interesting mechanics (I liked some of the combats you could avoid if you wanted but miss out on the potential benefits of winning), and whilst there's a lot of tough combats it never manages to feel overly frustrating in the way Curse of the Mummy or others do. The world of the gamebook manages to feel reasonably large and unconstricted, helped by the fact that you can revisit previous locations sometimes. It's not without flaws - in one of the areas you can revisit, an identical monster somehow manages to respawn each time you go there, and you start off with so many provisions and so many opportunities to restock that it seems a waste of time to even have a rule concerning them. In spite of the few problems, though, this is above average Fighting Fantasy, well-written and requiring a few playthroughs before you've seen everything. Recommended. |
