Item - River of No Return

You participate in a whitewater rafting trip.

This book is a little odd, in that it's pretty realistic - mostly. This also makes some of the oddities of the book stand out.

Somehow, despite traveling with professionals, the trip seems to fall apart within 10 minutes. This could have been easily addressed, by adjusting the setup to being a group of amateur thrill-seekers. That would also excuse some of the ridiculous choices you have, like deciding to remove your lifejacket while you're underwater.

Normally, these books suffer when they take detours that leave the premise behind, but I found this branch to be the most entertaining. You deal with some environmental activists who want to kill the undercover cop that was infiltrating their group.

It's not a bad book, but somehow, it just doesn't feel like much of an adventure. It should, since it's got surviving waterfalls, climbing cliffs, swimming out of whitewater, holding onto branches for your life...

But maybe it just needs an audience that is more enthusiastic for river adventure.
