Stockton's Thoughts: |
Escape from Horror House has a specific goal for the reader to achieve - removing a troublesome poltergeist from one's house. The title doesn't seem to be all that accurate since you're not escaping from your house. This book is fairly consistent compared with others in the series - most of the endings involve being killed by the poltergeist. Despite that, the choices seemed to still be somewhat unrelated to what really happens - even if there was a poltergeist in my house, I wouldn't hire a crazy psychic who just shows up on my front door to get rid of it. It's not exceptionally violent, either - nothing like Elevator to Nowhere or Attack of the Beastly Baby-Sitter. While the gameplay is certainly a marginal improvement, the oddball humour present in most of this series wasn't used very effectively, if at all. On the whole, I didn't find Escape from Horror House to be particularly memorable. I don't think I've ever found myself re-reading more than a few times. Its good points are ultimately balanced out by some serious shortcomings. |
