This book allows the reader to attempt to start up a new business, providing a learning experience in the process. There are no rules, so readers simply read through the book, flipping from chapter to chapter as the result of decisions. Because the book is about business, a financial summary listing net worth, revenues and expenses is given at the end of each chapter. Whenever the reader fails, he or she is given the opportunity to take the better path offered, and at the end of the book, the successful endings are ranked from best to worst. An index is included for readers who wish to find where in the book a particular concept was discussed.

Starting Up: An Interactive Adventure that Challenges Your Entrepreneurial Skills

User Comments

This standalone gamebook takes a practical topic - entrepreneurship - and aims to subject it to a theoretically interactive experience. The results and levels of enjoyability one might experience through this book are directly in proportion to one's level of familiarity with the worlds of business and commerce. I simply could not enjoy "Starting Up" because of how poorly I believe it delivered explanations of its subject matter to a general audience, and the jump in cognitive level of understanding requires advanced grasping of the basics of starting and running a business before even beginning to try the book's "gameplay" system (which seemed more like a guideline/coaching keeper than a traditional game). Consider whether the general lack of readability might inhibit your ability to play through this book before picking up a copy; there's only a select few who might both have the requisite knowledge AND be an existing fan of gamebooks. For the uninstructed-in-business, I testify this book to be a poor communicator on the subject matter and an unclear-to-the-uninitiated gamebook of potential merit, one which only might appeal to those in its very, very concentrated target audience group.
