Kveto's Thoughts: |
A book clearly intended for educational purposes, it spans about 500 years of the Roman Empire. After some basic background on Rome, you are offered three options: a wealthy Roman in the late republic, a Roman woman in the times of Nero, or a poor citizen during the fall of Rome. Each has its strengths. During the time of Julius Caesar, you can get involved in politics, siding with Caesar or Brutus' conspirators. I suppose as a child this would be a fun way to learn about historical events. You can also work as a businessman or become a famous chariot racer. Lots of options and endings, but as with many of these books sometimes the paths are too short. The thread as a Roman woman has fewer options and is more limited, but that would be in keeping with the era. It includes dying in childbirth. The third path is certainly the darkest, as it should be, with options such as getting raided by Visigoths or becoming a slave. Overall, the book probably accomplishes what it sets out to do, teaching about different walks of life and imparting some Roman history. |
