amesgames's Thoughts: |
I was hoping this would be a CYOA style western adventure, but it only vaguely was. Unfortunately this book's target audience is clearly grade school kids to a fault. Kid's books can be okay -- sometimes kid's books are charming and written well enough for adults to also enjoy -- but not this book. This is a very shallow read; an adult will likely have the whole thing read in a half hour. The prose and situations here are clearly described with a young child in mind, with little imagination employed. Weirdly for a kid's book, the outcomes are very dark regardless. In the three different story paths I embarked on, every one of them ended with me being shot to death. As I understand it, this series was created as edutainment. Well the only thing I learned in Westward Expansion, was if you went west you got dead. |
