Kveto's Thoughts: |
Another entry by Rabbi Roseman, this one explores the earliest era in the series, beginning with the fall of Judea from 70AD (the Tenth of Av) to the Romans, the event that triggered the Jewish diaspora. It gives the reader a chance to travel the world of the Roman empire or continue the fight against the Romans. Like all of the books of the series it is well researched, attempting to educate as well as entertain. Roseman includes events and elements up to the year 200AD, such as encounters with early Christians, such as Saul of Tarsus. It also can explore the development of the idea of rabbis. It offers a number of paths, with a choice or ending on every page, some happy some sad. Occasionally it features the "non-choices" that occur in some educational texts, where they offer the reader to dictate the events rather than make choices, which I'm not a fan of (e.g. "Do you escape from the Romans, turn to... or do the Romans capture you, turn to ..."). Overall, I like the time period and subject matter. It's not quite the wild ride that The Cardinal's Snuffbox is, but it's more fun than the immigration books, due to the more exotic setting. |
