Jordashebasics's Thoughts: |
This book always jumped out at me. It looked like Packard writing to fulfill a quota. Skateboard Champion has set a standard in my mind for what the sports themed books are going to be like. Fit in some lingo. Provide a glossary! Find a way to squeeze in a reference to the title with each ending. ("It looks like you'll never be a skateboard champion.") There should be some sort of crime-adventure happening on one of the paths. Who are you going to hang out with? It's important. I would say that it's a silly book, but I'm not sure about that. It seems pretty uncool to me, but I wonder what the appropriate audience would think. Despite an aura of ridiculousness, it's fairly dull. It's not frustrating or actively terrible, so at least it has that going for it. |
yunakitty's Thoughts: |
A so-so book. It was pretty obvious that Edward Packard decided to write a book about "what's hot" and then researched it in a book and wrote straight from his notes. You're a kid in a new town and you're looking for a group to belong to. The main path of the book, not surprisingly due to the title, is with the skateboarders. Again, as with most Packard books, making good, logical, karmically sound choices will result in the best endings. They're not very interesting, though. I just couldn't bring myself to care. And the local mafia having a grudge against skateboarders because one witnessed one of their crimes? So they knock a kid off a bridge over it? Lame and weak. Not Packard's best work. |
