Thank you to the author Dane Barrett for providing the cover spreads.
Dane is known for innovating on the interactive fiction mechanics, and his latest work is one of the most unique and authentic gamebooks out there. The author converted his own dreams and nightmares into twenty different short stories tied cleverly into a single gamebook. The game does not require dice rolling or equipment tracking but does require use of codewords in some stories. There are no puzzles to solve but getting to the “best ending” requires finding the one true path, so mapping and backtracking are key to success. Given there are no battles to fight and skills to check, I found this to be quite a long read (400 sections) as I was reading every single paragraph on my journey to the best ending and not skipping over some sections. Each of the twenty stories is unique and many are based in the author’s home country of New Zealand. I did not know what to expect going into the book and came away very pleasantly surprised. Dane continues to impress and innovate as a gamebook author and I highly recommend you try this one out.
