Jordashebasics's Thoughts: |
This is roughly what I thought the original Choose Your Own Nightmare line was going to be like. Your family moves into a new home. Your parents are demonologists (also ghost hunters, in some paths) and they have chosen to relocate into a haunted house on the day before Halloween. You immediately get swept up into a variety of creepy situations involving young witches, the spirit of Prudence Deadly, a witch whose soul seems to be haunting your house. This book is not intended for little kids. There are a lot of very dark endings, and I can imagine kids younger than 12 or so being scared of some of these things. Giant spiders decapitating a friend. Your parents dying in a fire. Most of the endings are not positive, but I was fine with that. These are supposed to be scary, and the upbeat endings tend to defuse any of the tension that was built. The book feels very long. I was reading it aloud, and it felt like there were an incredible number of paths. Lots of choices, and a lot of endings. This felt like the longest CYOA I've read. If you wanted more horror in your CYOAs, or in the original CYON line, this is exactly what you're looking for. |
