The Doomsday Device

PBeM Game: Doctor Doom (Chris Bynum) vs. Fantastic Four (Demian Katz)
8/19/2007 - 12/8/2008

Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 3:22 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Sorry for letting a month slip by already... but if you want to try Doomsday Device and don't mind the occasional hiatus, I can dig out my copy whenever you want to start...
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 5:26 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

OK, but I'll have to be Doctor Doom. Alana has my Fantastic Four book.

To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Not a problem -- I've found my set. Looks like you go first...
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 8:28 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

OK, my first target has been chosen. Catch me if you can, Richards!
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 9:55 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Okay, my team has been assigned. Where are you this turn?
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 10:12 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

I'm in Brooklyn. I have two Mandroids and two Doomdroids on this mission. Because Doctor Doom can't go on every mission, he's sitting this one out.

I forgot to ask, do you want to use the Karma Points? I personally think they're a pain to deal with.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 8:53 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

I sent the Human Torch to Brooklyn... and I'm fine with skipping Karma Points.
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 10:18 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Wow, I'm off to a roaring start. OK, I think you attack first!
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 4:39 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

According to my rules, I'm always the Defender first in situations where Doom is involved... but if Doom himself isn't there, I guess that means I get to go first. Might as well open with a Nova Blast, doing 15 damage to all opponents automatically and negating armor values. If you want to resolve the rest of the attack using dice to save time, that's fine with me... I'm forced to retreat if I take 20+ points of damage, however.
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 8:38 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

OK, since you used your Nova Blast, I'm going to assume that you no longer have armor, since your armor is generated by your flames. If that doesn't sound right, let me know.

Mandroid Larry attacks with a neuro stunner-miss!
Mandroid Bob attacks with a neuro stunner-hits for 4 damage
Doomdroid 1 attacks with his gauntlet blast-miss!
Doomdroid 2 attacks with his gauntlet blast-hits for 5 damage

Your turn.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 8:02 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Actually, now that I read more carefully, this was a foolish strategy -- I'm completely unable to fight further after my nova blast, so I must retreat. The rules are unclear about whether or not using the nova blast actually puts out my flames, though -- I'll leave it to your call whether or not I can claim my armor bonus against this damage.

Anyway, unless there's something you can do to prevent my retreat, I think this concludes our first battle. Let me know what you think I should do about the armor situation, and then I guess I'll continue with my turn....
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 9:55 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

I'm in no shape to stop you from retreating. Your Nova Blast hit me pretty hard. Unfortunately I don't have my FF book, so I can't check on the rules for the Nova Blast. When Alana used Nova Blast, she and I agreed that the Torch could not use his flames for weapons or armor until the next combat encounter. Thankfully, I don't have any combat after fighting you, so my turn is over.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 7:27 AM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Sounds like a fair ruling -- in any case, doesn't make any difference for this week, since I have now completed the week with no further combat, and the end-of-week healing puts me back in full health either way.

My week two assignments have been made -- let me know where you strike next!
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 9:17 AM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Wow, you're finished already? That can't be good for me.

Here's something else that's not good for me: Can you send me the info for Encounter 4 in your book? It should be for Thunderball.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 12:52 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Thunderball does 8 points of damage per successful Combat Turn with his ball, and when he misses, he negates the first successful hit on him with the swinging motion of his ball. Armor Rating: 3, Hit Points: 13.
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 3:38 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Scratch one snot-nosed punk of a Thunderball. My first week is complete.

For my next trick, please turn to page 102 in your book.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 4:07 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

I'll probably regret this... but turn to 102 in your book.
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 5:34 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

It's on! Quick question: when I attack you, do I determine the attacker and defender numbers? Not clear on that. But if that is the case, I have hit you using the Torch Foam device (check the last page of your Doom book, if you have it). On a successful hit, this puts out the Torch's flames until he gets a * on the combat table. I think that it should be a 2X or a *, in my opinion; that's a pretty powerful device. Let me know if that works or not.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 6:45 AM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

I think it's easiest if you determine attacker and defender numbers with a d20 -- keeps things moving. I'm also certainly not going to object if you let a 2X work to cancel the effect of the device. As you say, that is awfully powerful! In any case, I have scored a Miss result for this turn, so I'll put it back in your court. If you want to handle my rolls as well until I get my powers back (or get defeated), go ahead... I have no other options at the moment, so you might as well resolve it on my behalf.
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 10:01 AM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Doom must be too busy praising himself for his genius, because he missed. Your turn.
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 10:19 AM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

I got an X result, but it does me no good. Your turn (but as I said, if you want to take my turns for me while I'm effectively incapacitated to speed things along, I trust your integrity... even if you are an evil genius)...
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 3:07 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

OK, I'm not sure how many hit points you have, so I'll roll into Doom gets 5 turns or the Torch gets a 2X/*. If the damage I do to you knocks you out, let me know.

Doom attacks with his gauntlets- Hit for 8 damage.
Torch attempts to overcome the foam- X result.
Doom attacks with his gauntlets- Hit for 8 damage.
Torch attempts to overcome the foam- X result
Doom attacks with his gauntlets- Hit for 8 damage.
Torch attempts to overcome the foam-2X! You're back in business!
Doom attempts to attack with his gauntlets- Miss.

Now that your flames are back, you should roll for the Torch, since I don't know your HP or your Armor rating.

I got a special result that is irrelevant for this fight (A Mandroid hits automatically for 3 rounds). So that's a wasted turn. You're up.

Well, Uatu the Watcher must be cutting you a break, because I missed (maybe he blocked my shot with his freakishly huge head). I guess your defeat would cause a massive shockwave throughout the Marvel Universe. Your turn.

I've defeated an Alien Robot (encounter #5) and have now completed week 2. My week 3 assignments are in place -- let me know your next move.

To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Sat, Sep 8, 2007 at 3:22 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

Have you not completed week 2? If so, please do... but I thought the sequence was that I assign my team to locations at the start of each week, then you tell me where you're going to see if we have an encounter... so I'm currently at the "just assigned team" stage of week 3.
Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sat, Sep 8, 2007 at 8:13 PM

To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 6:03 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

#14 Fantastic Four Security Robots: cause 12 points of damage per successful Combat Turn. Armor Rating: 5, Hit Points: 30.

As far as when to make assignments go, I think I always have to make my assignments before yours. The procedure is I make assignments, you make assignments, then you announce your location. So I don't think there's any harm in either of us making our assignments before the other has completed the week as long as you don't make your announcement until I've had time to assign my forces appropriately. If you'd still rather I wait to assign until you've completed everything, I have no problem with that... but it potentially slows us down by an extra e-mail.

To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

OK, Week 3 completed. For week 4, I'm attacking Kennedy Airport. I'm sending 2 Mandroids and 2 Doomdroids, but Doom is sitting this one out.

Let me get my Doom voice going...........

"Kiss your loving wife goodbye, Richards-she's my next target! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!"

I'm in Manhattan, trying to kidnap Sue Richards. Doom IS on this mission with 2 Mandroids and 2 Doomdroids (this is the last mission he can go on, actually). So if you have anyone there, they can attack me now.

Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 8:57 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

I have to fight Cyclops from the X-Men (Encounter 26 in your book; I'll need his stats). Even if I kick his whiny butt, my kidnap attempt is foiled, so Invisible Woman lives to fight on. Stupid mutant.

Okay, at last, I'm back in the game too. Week five had me defeat the irritating Kraven. None of my team is on Staten Island in week six, so it looks like you are free to go about your evil business. Meanwhile, I have completed my own week six, splattering the Beetle. Let me know when you're ready for week seven.

To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

Before we start, a few questions:

1. Do you go first?
2. Because I successfully obtained the computer from the Baxter Building, the way the book describes it is that Doom can attack independently from the robot, since he doesn't have to control it manually. Does that sound right?
3. I'm assuming Mandroids and Doom Droids are not in this fight. Correct?
Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 4:39 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>

1. The rules say that in any combat where Dr. Doom is involved, he goes first.

2. Sounds reasonable to me.

3. It's not 100% clear, but I see no specific mention that they are involved.

To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>

OK, Doom attacks!

Doom attacks with his gauntlets (I got an X) doing 8 points damage subtracting whatever armor you've got. The statue attacks with its missiles, (I got a *), so that's a big fat miss.

Do your worst, Richards!

Doom gets an X- Because of the special he got last round, he does 16 damage (regular damage of 8 times 2). The statue gets an X and hits for 9 damage with its crown missiles. Since the missiles come from the crown, I'm going to treat them as a limited weapon with 5 shots, so I have one shot left.

Finally, a better round for me -- Mr. Fantastic hits for 14 damage, and Invisible Woman gets a 2X for a total of 24 damage. Thing misses.

Apparently Doom and the statue have turned into Imperial Stormtroopers, because they can't hit the broadside of a barn right now.

Congratulations, Doom is K'Oed. I guess the U.S. can keep their stupid Florida. Why Doom wanted Florida is beyond me. I think he's been listening to Dr. Evil too much.

Nicely played, my friend.

Winner: Fantastic Four (Demian)!
